This herb is sometimes grown as a salad or pot herb. In the arid parts of the Great Basin miner's lettuce can occasionally be found at the base on the north side of large rocks and cliffs where moisture accumulates.

It also grows on dunes and waste ground of Pacific coast of North America.

The name, Miner's lettuce, is attributed to the fact that early miners ate this plant for salad greens. Miner's lettuce
